Mechanical

Following a potential technical problem, passengers on a Spirit Airlines aircraft from Jamaica to Florida were advised to get ready for a water emergency on Saturday.

A statement from the airlines stated that, “following a suspected mechanical issue,” flight NK270 returned to its starting point shortly after taking off from Montego Bay on Saturday afternoon and travelled to Fort Lauderdale.
Passengers were urged to put on life vests and prepare for a water landing out of an abundance of caution, the airline said.
The airline said that the passengers departed as scheduled after the Airbus A321 made a safe landing at Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay. The flight’s safety remained unaffected by the technical issue.

Based on data from Flight Aware, the passengers were transferred to a new flight that arrived in Fort Lauderdale little under 45 minutes behind time.

According to a passenger who spoke to the Jamaican daily newspaper The Gleaner, “We were told the aircraft lost pressure and the pilot told us to prepare for a water landing and the highest emergency activated at MBJ.”

The traveller continued, “It was nerve-racking.”
The airline promised that its maintenance staff will conduct a comprehensive assessment of the aircraft.
The airline issued an apology to its patrons for any inconvenience.
