The trickle of goods into Gaza has slowed even more after a US-built relief pier collapsed in rough seas on Tuesday.
The current state of the three main entry points into Gaza from Egypt and Israel are as follows.
Rafah: Since Israel started its attack on the crossing on May 6 and took over the Gazan side, supplies have been piled up in Egypt and relief has been denied. Egypt and Israel have placed mutual blame for the obstruction.
Before last year, Rafah served as the main entry point for injured Palestinians and foreign nationals into Egypt as well as the route for relief to reach Gaza.
Kerem Shalom: With Rafah closed, the Kerem Shalom crossing into southern Gaza was opened last week. US President Joe Biden and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi decided to temporarily send aid to the UN via Kerem Shalom; Biden stated, “This will help save lives.” While efforts to reopen the Rafah crossing are ongoing, more than 370 aid trucks arrived at the crossing from Egypt on Monday, according to Israeli officials.
The main UN relief agency in Gaza, UNRWA, reported that it has only picked up thirty trucks for distribution on the Gazan side of the crossing; another UN agency stated that although the crossing is open “in principle,” access to aid from the Gaza side is hampered by fighting.
Erez: Help has been seeping into the enclave from this crossing to the north. 500 trucks, totaling 7,000 metric tonnes of aid, were moved through the crossing by the World Food Programme between May 1 and May 20.
Erez East, however, remains closed, with only the western portion of the bridge operational.
Additionally, the US pier? A little over ten days after it started to operate, the $320 million temporary pier that was constructed by the US military collapsed on Tuesday. Aid supplies will be further delayed as it is lifted from the Gaza coast and brought to the Israeli port of Ashdod for repairs, which will last more than a week.
How supplies for Gaza will pass through the floating pier: Initially, it is anticipated that the pier will assist in the daily delivery of approximately 90 truckloads of vital aid into Gaza. Once the system is completely functional, this might increase to about 150 truckloads, or over 2 million meals every day.
