Alice Stewart, a board member of the Harvard Institute of Politics and political commentator for CNN, passed away at age 58.

Alice Stewart, a Republican political strategist and CNN pundit best known at Harvard for her commitment to undergraduate students as a member of the Institute of Politics Senior Advisory Committee, died on Saturday morning. She was fifty-eight.
According to CNN, Stewart’s body was discovered outdoors in Virginia’s Bellevue neighbourhood, and authorities suspect she died as a result of a medical emergency.
Stewart, an Emmy Award-winning journalist, joined the IOP’s SAC in 2021 after serving as a resident fellow for two semesters.

Stewart was born on March 11, 1966, in Atlanta and graduated from the Grady School of Journalism at the University of Georgia.
Stewart was described as “a devoted supporter and a wonderful guiding influence” in a statement released jointly by IOP Director Setti D. Warren, Dean Douglas W. Elmendorf of Harvard Kennedy School, and IOP SAC Chair Michael Nutter.

The IOP likely refers to an organization or initiative related to politics and public service at Harvard College. The individual’s advice wasn’t just random; it was aimed at improving and fortifying the effectiveness of this organization or initiative.

In an interview, IOP President Pratyush Mallick ’25 described Stewart’s passing as “incredibly saddening” and complimented her long-standing dedication to the IOP and its student members.

“Above all, she was incredibly welcoming and ready to help students at any kind of moment’s notice,” Mallick commented. “Her loss is incredibly saddening.”
Stewart began her career as a local reporter in Georgia before working as the communications director for former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas), former Senator Rick J. Santorum, and former Rep. Michele Bachmann’s Republican presidential campaigns.

The organization had hoped she could help introduce more Republican voices to the IOP’s programming in the future:

This implies that there was a desire within the organization to increase the presence of Republican viewpoints in their programming, and Stewart was seen as someone who could facilitate that goal. Her involvement was seen as crucial in expanding the range of perspectives available to participants.

This quote emphasizes Stewart’s effectiveness in her role. She was instrumental in ensuring that Republican members of Congress were not only aware of the IOP’s events but also willing to participate in them. This highlights her influence and effectiveness in engaging with political figures.

IOP Treasurer Saba Mehrzad ’25 recalled how Stewart worked hard to not let her obligations as a commentator for CNN divert her attention from IOP students:

“She was a major help for us” implies that Stewart (referred to indirectly as “she”) was instrumental in supporting the organisation. Her efforts were substantial and well valued by the company.

“Making sure that Republican members of Congress were aware and eager to attend”:

Stewart’s aid included making sure that Republican members of Congress were not only informed about the activities and events, but also enthused about attending them. This suggests that she was successful in reaching out to and interacting with this particular political party.

Stewart refused to reschedule a prearranged discussion with the IOP’s Women’s Initiative and Leadership Group when she was asked to perform a TV hit. Instead, Mehrzad claimed, Stewart advised students who had signed up for the event before allowing them to watch her tape a live broadcast for CNN.

“That’s the biggest thing that still sticks out to me”:

This highlights the significance of the experience for Mehrzad. Despite the passage of time, this particular memory remains particularly vivid or impactful.

“Her willingness to incorporate the IOP and incorporate students as much as she possibly could”:

This part refers to the person on TV, likely Stewart, and emphasizes her willingness to involve the Institute of Politics (IOP) and its students in her activities. It suggests that Stewart made deliberate efforts to integrate the IOP and its students into her work, possibly by mentioning or involving them during her TV appearances.

Several former IOP leaders appreciated Stewart’s ongoing mentoring, even after their role with the IOP had ended.
Victor E. Flores ’23-’25 and Nadia R. Douglas ’23-’24, who previously co-chaired the IOP Fellows and Study Group Programme in 2021, noted in a joint statement that “her influence and dedication” influenced their own trajectories at Harvard.
“While we differed politically, her willingness to engage in difficult conversations served to inspire us and our fellow liaisons to continue our advocacy across political lines,” both of them wrote.

Several current and former IOP students recognised Stewart as a personal mentor who instantly became available.
Ethan C. Kelly ’25, the vice president of IOP, described Stewart as “someone I’ve looked to for advice and guidance.”
