Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the Harris County area due to today’s weather in Houston Thursday:
The Houston :
A storm system that threatened to dump torrential rains on East Texas triggered catastrophic thunderstorms in the country’s fourth-largest city Thursday, killing at least four people and shutting out power to over a million households.
The local National Weather Service office issued three Tornado Warnings for the Houston metro area, but by the time the storms passed, the majority of the damage was judged to be caused by high winds. Winds estimated to be over 70 mph destroyed trees, broke out windows in high-rise buildings and caused transmission towers holding power lines to collapse.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office urged everyone to remain off the highways as trees obstructed lanes and power outages surpassed 800,000 in the Houston metropolitan area.
According to PowertOuage.us, surrounding counties were also experiencing outages, bringing the state’s total to well over one million customers.
According to Houston Mayor John Whitmire, at least four individuals were killed by the storm, and state resources are being asked to assist with recovery.
According to officials, several of the injuries were caused by falling trees amid winds that likely reached over 100 mph.
